The Short Answer
Ask about exclusivity, every possible fee, exact hours rather than "full day," the outside-vendor policy, and who actually shows up on your wedding day. A venue that answers all five clearly, before you sign anything, is usually telling you everything else you need to know too.
A companion to our planner vetting checklist — same idea, aimed at the venue instead. Ask any venue these 12, including the ones you're already leaning toward.
"Is my date fully exclusive, or could another event share the property that day?"
Shared properties mean shared parking, shared noise, and a timeline that isn't fully yours. Ask before you fall in love with the space.
"What's the backup plan if it rains, or the power goes out?"
Ask for specifics, not reassurance. A named indoor space and a named generator are answers; "we'll figure it out" is not.
"Can I bring my own caterer and decorator, or only your approved list?"
Restricted vendor lists often carry a commission arrangement that quietly inflates your spend. Ask what an outside vendor would actually cost you in fees.
"What's included in the quoted price, and what gets billed separately?"
Service charges, cleaning fees, overtime and equipment rental are frequently billed on top of the headline number. Get every possible fee in writing before you sign.
"What are the exact in-and-out times, not just the date?"
"Full day" is not a time. Get the precise hours you actually have the space, including setup and teardown.
"How many guests does this space seat comfortably, not just fit?"
A capacity number on a brochure and a capacity that still feels comfortable with a dance floor and a stage are two different numbers.
"What happens to my deposit if I need to cancel or reschedule?"
Ask for the refund scale by notice period, in writing. A "non-refundable" clause with no stated basis is worth pushing back on.
"Is there enough power backup for catering, lighting and sound running at once?"
Outdoor and heritage venues especially may not have outlets for all three simultaneously — ask about generator capacity, not just its existence.
"Where do guests park, and how far is it from the venue?"
Ask for exact numbers — total spaces, overflow options, walking distance — not "plenty of parking."
"Who is my point of contact on the actual wedding day?"
The person who sold you the venue is often not the person who runs it on your date. Ask who actually shows up.
"Do you allow a baraat procession, and are there restrictions on noise, timing or route?"
A genuinely India-specific question generic venue checklists miss entirely — confirm it before invitations go out, not the week of the wedding.
"If my guest count changes closer to the date, how does that affect my final bill?"
Know the deadline for your final headcount, and what happens to your bill if the real number lands lower or higher than quoted.
